THEATRE ARTS
Drama and Theatre at ICS
Students develop an understanding and appreciation of performing arts, both inside and outside ICS.
Drama at ICS
We offer many opportunities for students across the school to pursue their passion for drama, both inside and outside ICS.
Our Secondary School Drama Department's Phoenix Theatre Group featured shows such as Legally Blonde JR, Dear Evan Hansen, Hairspray, Blood Brothers, Wicked, and Steel Magnolias.
ICS is a member of the International Schools’ Theatre Association (ISTA). Each year, students have the opportunity to attend a Middle or High School ISTA festival. Students in the IB Diploma Theatre programme also have the opportunity to attend the ISTA Theatre arts Programme Symposium (TaPS) event.
Drama Ensembles and Festivals
Middle School Festival: students in Grades 6-8 have the opportunity to attend an MS ISTA Festival. The ISTA festivals are a collaborative process, culminating in a final performance, and include ensembles, workshops, an artistic/cultural ‘out and about’ in the host city and social activities.
High School Festival: students in Grades 9-12 have the opportunity to attend an HS ISTA Festival. The ISTA festivals are a collaborative process, culminating in a final performance, and include ensembles, workshops, an artistic/cultural ‘out and about’ in the host city, and social activities.
Theatre arts Performance Symposium (TaPS): our Grades 11 & 12 IB Diploma Theatre students have the opportunity to attend an ISTA TaPS Festival. Students attend a series of unique three-day workshops that are specifically designed for students of DP Theatre, as well as take advantage of the festival location by attending several professional theatre productions.
Our Secondary Production
Our secondary students have the opportunity to participate in a theatre production each year. In addition to being an enriching opportunity for actors, these productions offer opportunities for composers and musicians, sound and lighting crew, backstage crew, set designers, costume designers, make-up crew, and a publicity team through the S.P.A.R.K. (see below).
IB Diploma Theatre Collaborative Project and Solo Performances
The IB Diploma Theatre Collaborative Project is a required component of the IB Diploma Theatre course. The show offers Grade 12 students the chance to work collaboratively to create and present an original piece of theatre (lasting 13–15 minutes) for and to a specified target audience, created from a starting point of their choice. This event also includes solo performances by Grade 11 DP Theatre students.
Student Performing Arts Krew - S.P.A.R.K.
A vital part of the Performing Arts extra-curricular programme is the Student Performing Arts Krew (S.P.A.R.K.). The programme offers students in Grades 6-12 the opportunity to learn about sound, lighting, stage management, costuming, set design, and make-up by supporting the many ICS productions and concerts throughout the year. This team is assisted by a dedicated Performing Arts Technician.
Students at ICS develop an understanding and appreciation of a variety of art forms - from visual arts to drama and music.
We understand the importance of physical activity in a student’s life, and offer a comprehensive Physical Education and Athletics Programme.
