As our community gets ready to head off for Ski Break next week, it’s a great time to think about what it means to explore the world - not just through travel, but through the way we meet new ideas, people and experiences.

In our IB-inspired community, being a good citizen isn’t about always having the “right” answer - it’s about staying curious, listening to others and making thoughtful choices. The World Pillar of our Strategic Plan invites all of us - students, staff and families - to look beyond simple rights and wrongs and to think about how our actions and stories connect us every day. Whether we’re skiing down a new slope or learning from someone’s perspective that’s different from our own, we’re all practicing openness to the wider world.

A school day can be like a snapshot of that bigger world. Maybe it’s that pause before jumping into a discussion or the moment you notice how your words affect someone else. These small choices matter. They’re opportunities to reflect, repair and grow together. In these moments, our students begin to see how every action creates ripples - and how they can use those ripples to build kindness, fairness and understanding.

The IB approach encourages open dialogue - inviting different viewpoints rather than trying to decide who’s “right.” In our classrooms, this means listening to perspectives shaped by different cultures, languages and experiences. Instead of “I’m right,” we practice “I want to understand.” That’s how empathy grows: by being curious about what we haven’t lived and by appreciating the diverse ways people think, learn and connect.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: to help our young people see themselves as active citizens - today, not someday. We want them to approach the world as listeners, collaborators and learners. When we all take small thoughtful actions and honour diverse perspectives, we build a more compassionate, connected world - right here together.

As we head into the break, we hope everyone finds moments to notice something new - a shared laugh, a different view, or a fresh perspective. Wherever your travels take you (even if it’s just a good book by the fire!), may curiosity and connection be your compass.
