The Sparrow in the Hall
12 December 2025
I remember reading a story in school recounted by an oddly named man called the Venerable Bede. I recall I had a hard time focusing because I could not get past the name. What made him so venerable? What kind of a name is Bede? It turns out he was an Anglo-Saxon scholar who recorded the history of Kings such as that of Edwin of Northumbria. The story goes that in 627 the king was contemplating the concept of eternity when a member of his court offered the following:
The present life of man, O king, seems to me, in comparison of that time which is unknown to us, like to the swift flight of a sparrow through the room wherein you sit at supper in winter, with your commanders and ministers, and a good fire in the midst, whilst the storms of rain and snow prevail abroad; the sparrow, whilst he is within, is safe from the wintry storm; but after a short space of fair weather, he immediately vanishes out of your sight, into the dark winter from which he had emerged. So this life of man appears for a short space, but of what went before, or what is to follow, we are utterly ignorant. (Book 2, Chapter 13)
This musing came to be known as the Sparrow in the Hall. The idea that even sparrows come to such a place for a short time to be warmed by a fire until the winter storms of rain and snow relent has always stuck with me.

I could not help remembering this tale each time I entered the Main Hall this week. The Operations Team has done a marvelous job of making that space feel extra festive and cozy. There, students sit together under the soft glow of strung lights to enjoy common meals and conversations. They will soon depart for their respective homes and hearths where they will reconnect with family and friends for a much deserved holiday. My hope is that, just like the sparrow in the hall, our students, parents, faculty, and staff will return to this place knowing it to be a refuge from cold winds and any wobbly world events. May all who pass through our halls, both young and old, be warmed by the same generous and welcoming ICS spirit that continues to burn bright into the new year.
