I have been thinking a great deal about the conflicts and challenges currently taking place in different parts of the world. We have had conversations as a leadership team about what is happening and how we can ensure that ICS is a haven that reflects our values and our position as an IB Global School. Part of this is recognising that events beyond our school can have a very real impact on members of our community, and we need to acknowledge this openly and thoughtfully.
As an international community, our highest priority is the safety, wellbeing, and sense of belonging of every student and family. Our community is enriched by people from many cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives, and it is important to us that our school remains a place where everyone feels respected, supported, and safe. Managing this with young people is not always simple as they are learning how to interact with others in a respectful way. They are learning the difference between a ‘joke’ and a harmful comment and learning to take ownership of their words and actions.
We are mindful that global events can sometimes bring feelings of sadness, uncertainty, stress, or worry for our students. Our teachers and support staff are attentive to these needs and are prepared to help students process their emotions in age-appropriate and supportive ways. At the same time, I am amazed, once again, by the resilience of our students. It is a privilege to see social-emotional skills, such as critical thinking and empathy developing as they learn to navigate their lives.
If your child or family is impacted by the current global situation, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to listen and to provide support wherever we can. Our counselling and pastoral teams are available for students who may need additional care, conversation, or reassurance during this time.
Thank you for the continued trust you place in our school and for the partnership we share in supporting our students.
In partnership,
Lindy Hirt
