Making Sure Every Child Feels Welcome and Included

In my first few weeks here at ICS, I’ve been struck by how much a simple smile or kind word can mean. One morning, as I stood at the entrance greeting students, I watched a Grade 2 student pause before stepping inside. She looked a little nervous, clutching her backpack. Before I could even move toward her, another student ran over, said, “Come sit with me today!” and together they headed off smiling. It was a tiny moment, but it stayed with me. Belonging often begins in these small, intentional gestures—an open seat, a warm hello, an invitation to join in.
At ICS, we believe every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and included. When children experience a genuine sense of belonging, they flourish—not only in their learning but also in their relationships, confidence, and well-being. This belief sits at the heart of our community pillar, Strengthening Belonging and Community Engagement. It calls us to create a compassionate, balanced, and inclusive school where every member feels a deep connection to our rich and varied learning opportunities.
Creating this culture doesn’t happen by accident. It starts the moment a child walks into a classroom or joins a playground game. It’s in the way we greet one another, how we treat each other and how we demonstrate respect and kindness. ICS more than just academic progress; it’s about learning and practicing how to be a productive contributor to all aspects of a learning community.
Belonging also grows when children are actively engaged as learners and thinkers. In the International Baccalaureate, students develop Approaches to Learning—skills like self-management, communication, and critical thinking—that help them connect deeply with others. When they work on a group project, share and listen to different perspectives during an inquiry, or productively grapple with a tricky problem, they are practicing what it means to learn with and from one another. Add to that our transdisciplinary learning, cultural celebrations, service opportunities and creative endeavors, and students gain authentic opportunities to build empathy, understanding, and respect—the threads that weave a strong community fabric.
And of course, our families play an essential role. Each one brings unique perspectives, traditions, and stories that enrich our school. When we honour those diverse experiences, we model for our children what it means to live and learn in a compassionate, inclusive world.
Belonging is not a box we check once; it’s a daily commitment. Every interaction is an opportunity to say: You are welcome here. You are important here. You belong here. As I continue to learn and grow with you all, I’m grateful for the countless small acts I’ve already seen that make ICS such a vibrant community. Together, by living out our community pillar and nurturing the IB spirit of collaboration and curiosity, we can ensure that every child and family not only feels included but knows deep down they are an essential part of something bigger. Together, we have the privilege of shaping a school where every person feels welcome, valued, and challenged to grow. I’m grateful to be part of this journey with you.
