Bridging the Digital Gap: A Community Conversation with Allison Ochs

As Lindy Hirt shared in last week’s Spotlight, our ICS community spent three meaningful days this week in conversation with Allison Ochs, founder of Edit Change Management. Allison is a long-time partner of ICS and a leading voice on digital well-being, family connection, and the realities of growing up in an online world.
Through her workshops, Allison engaged students, teachers, and parents in exploring how technology shapes the way we live, learn, and relate to one another. Her message was clear and refreshing: the goal is not to eliminate technology, but to live well with it, to help young people build balance, self-awareness, and critical thinking as they navigate their digital lives.
With students across the Primary, Middle and Senior Schools, Allison facilitated open and honest discussions about group chats, gaming, scrolling, and social media. Students spoke candidly about both the fun and the pressure of being constantly connected. What stood out most was their desire for adults to understand their digital worlds. They want us to listen, to be curious, and to create the trust and space for real conversations.
A weekend wondering for parents and caregivers:
- How are we building the kind of relationships where our children feel safe to talk about their online lives?
- How do they know they can come to us with questions or worries about what’s happening on their screens?
Allison reminded us that our role as adults is to create safe, judgment-free spaces by asking questions, listening with curiosity, and showing genuine interest in what children are doing online. She also encouraged families to establish clear, consistent boundaries like device-free mealtimes, tech-free bedrooms, and regular screen breaks, not as restrictions but as expressions of family values.
Her approach mirrors the research of Dr Emily Weinstein from Harvard University, whose work on digital agency encourages young people to develop intentionality and control in their online choices. At ICS, these ideas deeply connect with our mission to nurture reflective, responsible learners who act with empathy and integrity.
Ultimately, bridging the digital gap does not begin with avoidance, fear, or control. It begins with presence, boundaries, and conversation. When we stay curious and connected, we help our children use technology in ways that reflect who they are and who they are becoming in a world where digital life is simply part of life.
