Primary School Open House
Virtual Primary School Open House
Grades 1 to 5
ICS invites parents to find out more about how students engage in learning and develop as lifelong learners at the Inter-Community School. Join the Primary Principal and other members of the Leadership Team on Wednesday 28 April 2021, from 08:30 – 10:00 or 10:30 - 12:00 to find out why children thrive in educational programmes designed to develop a love for learning based on inquiry and self-discovery.
In a webinar-style presentation, find out about ICS's history, philosophy, international curriculum and partnership with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). Discover how our exciting curriculum, based on inquiry, not only engages children, but provides the foundation for future success in Secondary School and beyond. There will also be an opportunity to discuss your child's needs and ask our Primary Principal and Deputy Primary Principal any questions you may have. We look forward to welcoming you and your family.
Innovative Learning Experience
Our Primary School offers each child a personally rigorous and innovative learning experience relevant to the challenges of our quickly changing world. Students future-proof their skills by becoming self-directed, resilient, life-long learners.
Inquiry-based learning is the core approach taken in the Primary School in order to develop motivated, logical and self-directed learners. This is fundamental to the IB’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) and it provides the intellectual foundation for the higher order skills students will use and develop throughout their school career. ICS's approach to inquiry-based learning is the pathway to the Diploma Programme, to University and to the working world beyond formal schooling.
German Language Instruction
German is the language of our host community and holds an important place in the ICS curriculum where it is studied by all students from Preschool to Grade 10. Students may also choose to study German up to Grade 12.
The International Baccalaureate Bilingual Diploma
Over 40% of our graduates opt to earn a prestigious IB Bilingual Diploma. This additional qualification certifies that the student has successfully completed a programme of studies that included coursework in two languages at native speaker level.
ICS graduates qualify for entry into top universities around the world.
Knowing Every Child
Embedded in the ICS philosophy is the idea that students learn effectively when they feel safe, welcome and respected within the community. To do this, it’s often best to start at the simplest point by asking young people what they need from us. Their answer is often simple. They need us to be able to 1) help them organise their learning – which is important, but ‘functional’ and 2) to know who they are, which is fundamental.
Truly knowing our students is not achieved simply by wanting to know them but rather achieved through deliberate activities. One such example is the ‘Morning Meeting’ in Primary School. By greeting every child, allowing them to share ideas, facilitating a group activity, and providing a thoughtful morning message, we are showing our students that they are heard and known. See the video below for an example of a morning meeting.
ICS Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition 2021
‘Through the PYP exhibition, students can come to understand the responsibilities associated with being internationally-minded and help to create a better and more peaceful world.’
Recently, our Grade 5 students took responsibility for their own learning; exploring, documenting and sharing their understanding of a significant local issue they had chosen to inquire into. Throughout their inquiry, the students developed valuable skills such as research skills and self-management skills; skills that will support their transition to Middle School and beyond.
This culminating experience in Grade 5 represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school, enabling Grade 5 to develop as internationally-minded students who can make a positive difference in their lives and the world around them.
