Four ICS musicians recently pursued their passion for singing at the 2017 AMIS High School Honour Choir Festival
The 2017 AMIS High School Honour Choir Festival was held at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi this year. AMIS is an international organisation dedicated to the promotion of excellence in music education. Their annual middle- and high-school festivals provide opportunities for students to develop their understanding, knowledge and appreciation of music through collaborative music-making.
Competition for the three auditioned choirs was very tough, with singers from international schools all over the globe vying for places. ICS Grade 11 students Monica C., Emilie E., Sophie K. and Elise M. were selected for the 60-strong Women's Choir. The students prepared for several months before the festival, tackling a demanding choral repertoire in English, Gaelic, Latin, New Zealand Maori, Spanish and Swedish. Three days of intense festival rehearsals culminated in a gala concert.
During the festival, students also had the opportunity to learn more about the Emirati culture. They visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and a heritage village, took a dhow boat trip and went on a desert safari.
Our students had the following to say about their experience:
"During the festival I really enjoyed meeting people from so many different countries, and being able to sing together and improve through three days of rehearsals, for a fun, emotional concert" (Sophie K.)
"The festival was one of the best experiences I've ever had and I learnt so much!" (Monica C.)
