Languages play an important part in the life of an international school
As a truly international school, we celebrate the diversity of all learners in our environment, those who come into this school with a multitude of languages other than English, and who work with our exceptional teachers to advance their English proficiency in the current programmes.
As a school with an exceptional track record in the linguistic development and achievements of our students in English as an Additional Language, we have continued this tradition through the creation of Alegría, an Intensive English Acquisition programme that enables English language learners to access the IB curriculum at our school.
Unique to the Inter-Community School and driven by a commitment to enabling students to learn in the English medium, the Alegria programme is designed to propel students’ English language proficiency while working in conjunction with our Middle Years Programme, guided by our expert English as an Additional Language educators.
The Alegría Classroom
The Alegria classroom is a space that allows for intensive instruction and the necessary support for students to succeed. It is a place where everyone belongs, and where our students feel safe to be themselves, to learn at their own pace, and to lead their learning. In addition to this intensive instruction in English, Alegria students will attend a variety of mainstream lessons in mathematics, science, performing arts and physical education. Native German speakers will also attend German lessons. Alegria students are not required to study any additional foreign languages.
We are a proudly diverse school, welcoming and committed school, and Alegría speaks to our determination to extend the offering we provide while holding fast to the traditional medium of instruction in our school - English. The programme's name speaks to a new beginning, to the dawn of new opportunity, new growth, and a new journey, for students who want an IB education, in Zurich’s oldest International School.
