Multilingualism plays a pivotal role in the life of an international school
At ICS we celebrate the diversity of all learners in our environment, ensuring that students from different language communities have equal access to quality education. Students coming into this school with a language other than English have the opportunity to work with our exceptional language acquisition specialists to advance their English proficiency.
As a school with an exceptional record of success in the linguistic development and achievements of our students with English as an Additional Language, we have created Alegría - an Intensive English Programme. Alegría engages with children's linguistic and cultural backgrounds in a positive manner, enabling them to access the IB curriculum in order to thrive at our school.
Driven by a commitment to the holistic development of all students, the Alegría programme is designed to accelerate students’ English language proficiency. Working collaboratively with our Middle Years Programme, and guided by our expert “English as an Additional Language” educators, the Alegría program is designed to emphasise literacy and English language acquisition skills across a variety of subjects.
The Alegría Classroom
The Alegría classroom is a welcoming space that allows for intensive instruction with the necessary support for students to succeed. It is a place where everyone belongs, and where our students feel safe to be themselves, to learn at their own pace.
In addition to this intensive instruction in English, Alegría students will attend mainstream lessons in mathematics, science and physical education, as well as some visual or performing arts. Native German speakers will also attend German lessons.
We are a proudly diverse school, welcoming and committed, and Alegría speaks to our determination to extend the offerings we provide while upholding English as the primary medium of instruction in our school.
The programme is a gateway for students with a language other than English seeking an IB education in Zurich’s oldest International School.
