On Saturday 9 June, 64 members of the 2018 graduating class at ICS received their diplomas, taking their next big step into a bright and promising future.
The introduction, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the ICS graduating class of 2018", rang out as 64 Grade 12 students walked to the stage and looked out onto an audience of family and friends who had gathered to honour them and recognize their achievements.
In his welcome address, Sanjeev Premchand, Chair of the ICS Board of Trustees, reviewed facts and figures taken from the year in which the graduates were born, comparing them to some significant milestones of today's world in 2018. He told the students that "graduation is about values and friendships" and encouraged them to "explore, dream and discover".
Head of School, Mary-Lyn Campbell congratulated the graduates for closing this stage of their lives so successfully, and both Ms Campbell and Mr Premchand praised the commitment and dedication of the entire ICS staff who had offered unwavering support throughout the students' years at ICS.
Guest Speaker Sarah Brook, CEO and Founder of the Sparkle Foundation, started her address to the audience with the words "the first thing I would like to say is thank you", referring to the invaluable support her organization has consistently received from ICS. Sarah spoke to the graduates about achievable goals and, drawing on examples from her own life and experience, she also spoke about the importance of failure, saying "rock bottom can be a great foundation to build and grow. You choose every day if you want to be a success or a failure; it's up to you."
Following Sarah's inspiring message, the graduates received their diplomas and Grade 12 students Emilie E and Edoardo G spoke to their classmates, recounting some adventures the class shared throughout their ICS years and expressing "a big thank-you to the teachers and parents who supported us through the IB".
The Graduating Class Awards, recognising the extraordinary achievements of students who have excelled and lived the ICS mission, were given to Monica C and Adrien G-B for Creativity; to Leonie S for Action; to Paul V O for Service; to Caleb L for Academic Excellence and Andrea V B received the ECIS Award for International Understanding.
A musical interlude featuring the voices of Monica C, Emilie E, and Sophie K with Elise M on piano, concluded the ceremony and the graduates received a standing ovation from family and friends as they left the stage.
After the ceremony, the Head of School, the Board of Trustees and ICS staff welcomed the graduates, together with their families and guests, to the outdoor terrace to share refreshments and continue celebrating the ICS Class of 2018.
