Authors visit ICS

Two well-known figures from the world of children's books are visiting ICS this school year.

On 21 & 22 April 2016, the award-winning children's author Deborah Ellis joins Grades 5-8 students and students in Secondary School to discuss her work. Deborah is a peace campaigner as well as an author. Her books include The Breadwinner, about an 11-year-old girl living in Afghanistan under the Taliban who is forbidden to earn money as a girl and must transform herself into a boy to become the breadwinner for her family.

Award-winning illustrator Karin Littlewood visited ICS on 12-13 November 2015. During Karin Littlewood's visit, she worked with Early Years to Grade 3 students.

Karin says that visiting schools as a practising illustrator is "an opportunity to share my experience and enthusiasm with children and teachers. The day begins with storytelling. I show how the book was 'born' - from my first marks on paper to initial sketches to see the final illustrations. It continues with the children working on a project, with an emphasis on drawing skills and the children's role, as illustrators, of telling a story through the pictures they create.”
